Entry into Jerusalem on a Donkey
Written: ~520 BC→Fulfilled: ~AD 30
Zechariah prophesied the Messiah's triumphal entry into Jerusalem riding on a donkey.
Prophecy & Fulfillment
Old Testament Prophecy
Zechariah 9:9
"Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."
New Testament Fulfillment
Matthew 21:4-5
"This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: "Say to Daughter Zion, 'See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'""
Commentary
The Triumphal Entry is one of the most precisely fulfilled prophecies. Jesus deliberately arranged to ride a donkey into Jerusalem, fulfilling Zechariah's prophecy to the letter. The crowd's shout of "Hosanna" (Save us!) echoes Psalm 118:25-26.
