Prophecy & Fulfillment
Old Testament Prophecy
Ezekiel 34:23-24
"I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd. I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them."
New Testament Fulfillment
John 10:11
""I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.""
Commentary
Ezekiel's prophecy of the one shepherd (a new David) is fulfilled in Jesus's "I am the good shepherd" declaration. The contrast with the false shepherds of Israel (Ezekiel 34:1-10) makes the messianic claim explicit. Jesus's laying down his life for the sheep fulfills the ultimate act of the good shepherd.
