Prophecy & Fulfillment
Old Testament Prophecy
Zechariah 9:9
"Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."
New Testament Fulfillment
John 12:14-15
"Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: "Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt.""
Commentary
The Triumphal Entry was a deliberate messianic act. Jesus sent disciples to fetch a specific animal, fulfilling Zechariah's prophecy precisely. The contrast between a war horse (the symbol of conquest) and a donkey (the symbol of peace) reveals the nature of Jesus's messiahship: he came in peace, not military conquest.
