Prophecy & Fulfillment
Old Testament Prophecy
Isaiah 9:6-7
"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom."
New Testament Fulfillment
Luke 1:32-33
"He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob's descendants forever; his kingdom will never end."
Commentary
Isaiah 9:6-7 is one of the most theologically rich messianic prophecies, applying divine titles (Mighty God, Everlasting Father) to the coming child. Gabriel's announcement to Mary in Luke 1 directly echoes Isaiah 9:7, connecting Jesus to this prophecy. The titles indicate that the coming king would be divine, not merely human.
