Prophecy & Fulfillment

Old Testament Prophecy

Micah 5:2

"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times."

New Testament Fulfillment

Matthew 2:1

"After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem."

Commentary

This is one of the most specific geographical prophecies in Scripture. The Jewish chief priests and scribes quoted this passage to Herod when the Magi inquired about the Messiah's birthplace (Matthew 2:5-6). The phrase "whose origins are from of old, from ancient times" points to the pre-existence of the Messiah.
