Commentary

Jesus's quotation of Psalm 22:1 from the cross is one of the most profound moments in Scripture. By quoting the opening verse, Jesus was reciting the entire Psalm, which moves from desolation to vindication. The Psalm describes crucifixion in detail 1,000 years before it was invented as a form of execution.
