Prophecy & Fulfillment
Old Testament Prophecy
Psalm 22:7-8
"All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. "He trusts in the Lord," they say, "let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.""
New Testament Fulfillment
Matthew 27:39-43
"Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads... In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him... "He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'""
Commentary
The mockery at the cross echoes Psalm 22:7-8 almost word for word. The taunters' challenge "Let God rescue him" directly mirrors the Psalm's "Let the Lord rescue him." Matthew records this fulfillment with striking verbal parallels.
