""Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me!" declares the Lord Almighty. "Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones.""

New Testament Fulfillment

Commentary

Jesus quoted Zechariah 13:7 at the Last Supper, applying it to himself as the shepherd and his disciples as the sheep. The fulfillment came hours later when "everyone deserted him and fled" (Mark 14:50). The prophecy also implies the resurrection: "I will turn my hand against the little ones" suggests the shepherd's restoration.
