The Suffering Servant, Made an Offering for Sin
Written: ~700 BC→Fulfilled: ~AD 30
Isaiah described the Servant's death as a guilt offering (asham), Paul identifies Jesus as the sin offering that the Law could not provide.
Prophecy & Fulfillment
Old Testament Prophecy
Isaiah 53:10
"Yet it was the Lord's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand."
New Testament Fulfillment
Romans 8:3
"For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh."
Commentary
The Hebrew word asham (guilt offering) is a technical sacrificial term. Isaiah describes the Servant's death in the precise language of the Levitical sacrificial system. Paul's "sin offering" language in Romans 8:3 directly echoes this, showing that Jesus fulfilled the entire sacrificial system.
